Planning to immigrate to Canada? Whether you applied online, through a visa center, or sent a paper application, it’s essential to know if your file reached the right hands. In this blog, we break down how to verify if Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has received your Canadian Immigration or visa application—and what steps you can take next.
For Online Submissions: What to Expect After You Apply
If you’ve submitted your application through the IRCC online portal, here’s what typically happens:
- After submission, you’ll see a confirmation screen right away.
- IRCC sends an automated email to the address you provided in your application.
This email:
- Confirms that your form was submitted and reached IRCC’s system.
- Directs you to log in to your IRCC secure account for your application number and further updates.
🔔 Note: This confirmation does not count as an official Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR).
The AOR is only issued once IRCC:
- Opens your application.
- Confirms it’s complete.
- Begins the initial review process.
This may take anywhere from a few days to a few months, depending on the program and workload.
Tip: Save both the confirmation email and AOR for your records—they’re important for future inquiries.
Applications Submitted via Visa Application Centres (VACs)
If you used a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country:
- You will receive a reference number or tracking ID after submission.
- Use this ID to track your application status through VAC services, which may include:
- Online tracking portals
- Email notifications
- SMS alerts (extra charges may apply)
- Live chat or helpline support
💡 Tracking options vary based on the VAC location and country—check the official IRCC VAC directory to see what’s available in your region.
Paper-Based Applications: How to Confirm Delivery
Paper submissions are a bit different. You won’t get an immediate receipt confirmation or AOR by default.
To confirm your application reached IRCC safely:
- Use a tracked mail or courier service that:
- Offers a tracking number
- Requires a signature upon delivery
This serves as proof that your package was delivered to IRCC.
Good to Know: Some paper applications may later be connected to an IRCC secure account for digital updates (explained below).
How to Link a Paper Application to Your IRCC Online Account
If your application type allows linking, follow these steps to connect your paper file to your IRCC account:
Step 1: Create Your Secure Account
Visit the IRCC website and register if you don’t already have an account.
Step 2: Start the Linking Process
In your account dashboard, go to:
“View the applications you submitted” → “Add (link) your application.”
You’ll need your application number for this step.
Step 3: Enter Your Application Details
Make sure the personal info you enter matches your original application. If anything has changed (e.g., passport number or address), use the most recent information.
You have only five attempts to link your application. After the fifth failed attempt, you’ll be locked out for 24 hours.
Once linked, updates and messages from IRCC will appear in your account.
It may take up to 5 business days for your file to appear. If it still doesn’t, report the issue via the IRCC web form and choose “Report a technical problem.”
