Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues its active pursuit of Skilled Immigrants as it issues Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in the third Express Entrydraw of the week February. This draw, focused on agriculture and agri-food occupations, saw 150 candidates receiving Invitation to Apply (ITAs).
To qualify for consideration, candidates needed to meet a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 437. This draw follows two others earlier in the week, each targeting specific sectors of the Canadian economy.
The first draw, held on February 13, was a general draw that invited 1,490 candidates with a minimum CRS score of at least 535. The following day, on February 14, IRCC issued Invitation to Apply ITAs to 3,500 candidates in a category-based selection draw for health care occupations, where candidates needed a minimum CRS score of 422.
The trend of Category-Based Selection draws began in May 2023 when IRCC introduced six new categories targeting specific human capital attributes. These categories include :
- Healthcare
- STEM professions
- Trades occupations
- Transport Occupations
- Agriculture and Agri-Food Occupations
Candidates who wish to be considered for category-based selection must be eligible for one of the Express Entry programs and have an application in the pool. The categories were established after consultations with various stakeholders, including provincial and territorial governments, employers, immigration researchers, and settlement services, to address critical gaps in Canada’s labor force.
Express Entry, the application management system, oversees three economic immigration programs for Skilled Workers:
Federal Skilled Worker Program : The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is part of Canada’s Express Entry system, attracting skilled immigrants based on a points system. It doesn’t require a job offer but assesses candidates based on factors like education, work experience, and language proficiency. Successful applicants contribute to Canada’s economy and diversity, fulfilling its labor market needs.
Canadian Experience Class : The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is an immigration program for individuals with skilled work experience in Canada who want to become permanent residents. It offers a streamlined pathway to residency for those who have at least one year of full-time skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years, meet language proficiency requirements, and pass medical and security checks. The CEC contributes to Canada’s economy by retaining talented individuals and filling gaps in the labor market.
Federal Skilled Trades Program : The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a Canadian immigration initiative targeting skilled tradespeople seeking permanent residency. It aims to address labor shortages by attracting individuals with experience in specific trades. Applicants must meet criteria like work experience, language proficiency, and job offers or certification from Canadian authorities. The FSTP contributes to Canada’s economy by filling gaps in the trades sector and promoting economic growth.
The system evaluates candidates based on factors such as language ability, work experience, occupation, education, and age, assigning them a CRS score.
Once a candidate has a CRS score, they are ranked against other candidates in the Express Entry pool. Those with the highest CRS scores are more likely to receive an invitation in an upcoming draw. Upon receiving an ITA, candidates have 60 days to submit their final application to IRCC for Canada PR (Permanent Resident).
